What To Write About?

Elliott, my trusty feline companion, woke me up just after 5:56 AM the other morning. As I lay there, keeping him quiet, while waiting for my wife to wake up, I found myself with a rare opportunity for some deep thinking. My mind wandered eventually to my writing, my blogging, and the direction it’s been taking.

Or more accurately – not been taking.

Then that afternoon I got my weekly newsletter from John P. Weiss and his article this week really spoke to me – Find the Thing That Never Abandons You | John P. Weiss – Blog. A passage towards the end of the article really made me think:

What songs still dance in your heart? What muse still whispers in your ear? What lifelong passion has never abandoned you?

John P. Weiss

For many, this might be singing, dancing, painting, archery, yes, even writing, or one of the many other pursuits that we humans are passionate about. But for me my lifelong passion…the one thing has always been there for me is my running.

Like Charlie in Weiss’ article I’m not great at my passion, but at the same time it is my passion.

Which One?

What lifelong passion has never abandoned you?

The Question

Over the years, my blogs (yes, there have been too many) have taken many forms. They’ve been a platform for Edtech, book reviews, running shoe/tech reviews, a space for personal reflections, and a chronicle of my various hobbies and interests.

I asked myself when am I happiest writing?

When I did, I realized something important:

  • I enjoy writing about my running.

Just me writing about my experiences, thoughts I have while running, lessons learned, and chasing a few dreams along the way.

I know that I’m not some great runner, I am an old mid-packer, who doesn’t have any wonderful initials after my name or Coach in front of it. I’ve simply been a runner since 1971 when I started high school cross country. Over 50 years, running has been my trusted companion, a source of joy, more challenges than I care to remember, and use it as a way to explore the world at my own pace. Since the Fall of 2011, I’ve shared my running journey, documenting the highs, the lows, and everything in between on my blogs.

After having my running taken away for almost 15 months due to a freak knee injury, I’m finally getting closer to where I want, no need to be – running regularly again. As a result my Muse is whispering in my ear again, telling me to share the journey, the challenges to be met, the small victories celebrated, people I meet, and lessons learned along the way.

Though me being me, I’ll still throw in a few other interests from time-to-time.

I hope you’ll join me on this journey. Whether you’re a fellow runner, an occasional reader, or just someone who stumbled upon this post, I’m glad you’re here.

Yep, I keep trying. 😊
