Why Yes I Am A Wimpy Old Guy

Okay, the wife just called me a wimp…she was checking the weather forecast for tomorrow and let me know it wasn’t going to get out of the low 20*Fs. I am headed South to run with a friend and she asks me if we are going to run outside and continued on… after all you haven’t been running outside all that much when its cold or nasty lately, you’ve been kind of wimpy lately”.

Well now…I gotta admit that it is true.

Yeah as much as it hurts to admit it, I have been running inside on the treadmill more often this year than past years. It seems that older I get the less I enjoy running in the elements, you know those cold arse days or when it is raining and the temps are pretty close to that 32*F errr freezing temps.

Yeah, I am getting wimpy and I must say that I enjoy those treadmill runs in shorts and t-shirt versus being bundled up and either freezing my arse off, slip siding away on the ice of a new day or getting soaked and becoming hypothermic.

So as usual the wife is correct…err right or whatever you say when you just should say, “yes dear”. Heheheheehe

Yes, this morning I went to the gym, after I dropped off SD2 at her work, because the roads were rather nasty and that is part of what I do in the winter. The commute now is a lot better than having to drive to Waterville or Winslow to do it – that is for sure.

Since it is Tuesday, that means it is also speedwork day and there ain’t no way I am doing speedwork out in that crap.

So I stopped at Planet Fitness on the way home and had a quality workout.

  • .50 @ 7.2 mph
  • 1.0 @ 8.8 mph–at the 1.0 mile mark, I was feeling pretty good, so I thought lets see how long I can maintain this. I was also wearing my heart rate chest strap and thought when my H/R gets over 165 or if it starts doing crazy stuff, I will slow back down. Right at the end of the fast mile, I got to 166 bpm, so it was time slow it down again.
  • .20 @ 7.0 mph
  • .50 @ 8.8 mph
  • .30 @ 7.0 mph
  • .50 @ 8.8 mph
  • .10 @ 9.2 mph – My heart rate was still in the 166 to 168 range for this last tenth of a mile

A 22:36 on the treadmill is a good quality workout. So I slowed it back down to catch my breath and let the ticker ease off for minute or two.

Then I started back up again

  • 1.0 @ 7.0
  • .1 @ 9.3 mph
  • .1 @ 7.0
  • .1 @ 9.3 mph
  • .1 @ 7.0
  • .1 @ 9.3 mph
  • .1 @ 7.0
  • .1 @ 9.3 mph
  • .1 @ 7.0
  • .1 @ 9.4 mph
  • .1 @ 10.2 mph

A nice finish to the run and actually on the 9.3 mph sections it seemed as though I actually had a nice stride going because the heart rate was 154-155 for those tenth of mile strides. Although that 10.2 mph burst at the end did get the ticker bouncing around 168-170, but I survived.

Now to answer the question about being wimpy.

Hell Bennie didn’t even want to take his long walk today – he got to the end of the driveway, did his business, looked up at me with that WTFO look of his and trotted back up to the house. He is pretty smart that way some days.

So…

I have a feeling that the treadmill and I are going to be good running partners a LOT this winter. I want to accomplish and running outside in the middle of a what appears is going to be an old-fashioned Maine winter really ain’t all that appealing to this old fart.

So wimpy I shall be and not worry about it at all.

As for tomorrow, I will suck it up get a run in with a friend, talk about running shoes, politics and life, but it will be outside in the elements on what looks to be a purty chilly kind of Fall morning. The lunch will taste good after, but the company is what I am looking forward to. 🙂

  1. We have talked about this before – there are no medals for running outside when it is wicked cold out :). As it is I am looking for something new and warmer for my hands after these past several days in the 20s. That is my weak point … jeez I think I could run in shorts if I had a pair of those $400 heated gloves! haha. Oh well – be a wimp, and have fun running on the treadmill!
