So It Begins – MT Pre-Training Week 5-28-18

Well there – upload failed, so let’s try this again.

Since I have made the commitment to start getting ready for my marathon there is a bunch of stuff that I have started to look at and think about. First of all I needed find a marathon training plan that sort of corresponds with how I much I thing that I will need to train, but not overtrain to get to the starting line.

I found this training plan online from Coach Jenny – someone that I have followed online for several years. It seems to be close to what I am looking for.

Then when I plugged the workouts into my spreadsheet it comes out to starting on June 4th, with the way that I want to do things. So I actually start next week.

Oh shit!!!

That is like in – next Monday!!!However, since I have figured out that I am going to finish this marathon, I might just as well get going and deal with things when or as I need to. It just doesn’t give me a lot of time to think through a few things that I wanted to get straight first.

Also, I guess the elliptical might get a bit more work than I expected the first week or so, because I still want to baby the right hamstring a little longer, to keep it happy. We will see how things go.

Speaking of the elliptical that is what today’s workout was – 45:00 minutes on it. Which came out to just over 9.0 miles. I felt strong the entire time on the elliptical and no issues with the right hamstring or anything else. However, I am still not running until June 1st, I want to get the rest of the little niggles a little more time to heal before I start pounding the pavement again. I kind of wish that I could use the same stride running that I have when I am on the elliptical. 🙂

After I finished with the elliptical, I did a good post run workout. Something that I want to make a regular part of my workout regimen. It will help me with avoiding some of those less than wonderful injury timeouts that I encounter all too often.

This week is going to be an easy week, just to get myself back to running starting on June 1st, with no issues with the hamstring or other things.

I am going use an idea that Ray Charbonneau used in his book “Overthinking the Marathon”, but instead of using a bike, I will be using the elliptical mileage and multiplying by .58 to get an guesstimated running equivalent. That way I will use my cross-training as a part of my total weekly mileage, which will help my ego and not let me get too much over the intended weekly mileage I put on my body.

Overall, I was very happy with where I am on my rehab of the hamstring and as long as I am not overly aggressive about things, it should hold together. However, figuring out that my marathon training will start next Monday was a little bit of a surprise, but it is what it is and it just means that I might do more on the elliptical than I would have otherwise, which probably is not all that bad of a thing the first few weeks as I figure out how to tweak the plan to work best for me.

It gives me a week to get myself setup and ready to go – that should be more than enough time to figure things out and then tweak things as I go. 🙂

looks like a really nice and slow build up, and the plan sounds great! I can’t wait to follow you on this and cheer you on, Harold! Just take care of the niggles before the training really starts, I agree, and develop a good relationship with your post-run stretching and foam-rolling routine!

Thanks Dorothea, it seemed like the right training plan for me when I saw, not a super difficult one and although I made a few tweaks based on what I know will change, just due to my schedule, it will get me through the training phase. 🙂
