I have a little experience with this retirement thing or not being a part of the regular workforce to any degree, so when I left University College at the end of June, it was more like getting back to a schedule that I have previously worked hard to perfect.
To be honest it didn’t take me long to get back into the routine…you know the one that I had before I went back to work in 2015.
Here is a snapshot of a day in retired life:
Even though I put a particular time just to have some structure here, the time I/we actually get around to getting going can vary – dependent upon how I/we are feeling that day.
The clock is a guide (sort of), not the final arbiter of when things will be or get done.
6:00 to 8:00 AM – Morning Routine. What time we wake is often dependent upon the noise levels of the local wildlife or when our critters inside the house decide we should be up and about. The morning constitutional, make the bed, walk Bennie, feed the crows and other critters, housework, prep/eat breakfast, get caught up on reading blogs and news, do my fantasy baseball line-ups, do the clean-up. All done at a leisurely not in a hurry – I gotta get going someplace way.
8:00 to 10:00 AM – Healthy stuff – I do Prehab and stretching before running or walking with Bennie (and/or then go for a run), light weights workout, 2-5 minutes on the inversion table, upload GPS data from run(s), relax for minute.
10:00 – 12:00 – Start on project work around the house or any appointments.
12:00 – 1:00 – Lunch, read, research, do running log, start daily blog post
1:00 – 2:00 – Nap — One of my favorite times of the day and an important part of my running recovery program – yes, naps are a necessary component. It does help and when I couldn’t I could tell the difference. I don’t always sleep for an hour, but I do rest or meditate in my chair for a while.
2:00 to 4:30 – Work around the house some more on projects or appointments.
4:30 to 5:30 – Relax a little before starting supper. See if anything important happened in the world. Clean-up from the day (that gotta shower stuff) and get ready for supper
5:30 to 6:30 – Mary or SD1 do most of the meal prep (if it hasn’t already been done earlier in the day) and I stay out-of-the-way unless we are doing something with BBQ or Pizza. Eat and do clean-ups, without rushing to get through the meal.
6:30 to 10:00 – Coffee, a little TV in the background, Jeopardy, Forged in Fire re-runs, something historical on Educational type channel or a Red Sox game during the summer and Celtics during the winter.
10:00 – Read in bed for 15-20 minutes – nighty, night.
This is a typical day in the life, unless we are over in New Hampshire and then we try to follow a similar schedule. However, with the amount of work that needs to be done, it is LOT less relaxing and more get things done so we can move on, also no internet or cable makes it a little more reading heavy.
Yeah, being retired it is more about our time and how WE want to use it. Not being tied to the daily work schedule is liberating and a lot less stressful.
If on a whim, we decide to do something else than we originally thought we would do that day, we have the freedom and flexibility to go do it, without stressing about what we are doing, how long it will take us or what we not doing. Luckily we are both pretty low maintenance type of people and don’t always have to be spending money to be enjoying life.
Actually many of the best memories are when we don’t really spend a lot of money, but how we have spent our time together.
The older I get, the more I realize just how valuable my time actually is.
Besides I get to run more :-).
